Hi again! Welcome to Vomo 😉
I expect this to be a long post, we have a lot to get through!
I loved this episode, not only because of the proposal, but I really adored Ashley’s family! ALL of them! The problem with doing a recap so late after the end of the show airing, is that I now know a lot more about the people involved… and I just can’t hate CC. We’ll talk about it a little bit below of course, but as usual, I want to focus on the ‘Looks’ (aka those moments between JP and Ash we were lucky enough to be witness to).
Ashley was so happy to see her family, as she said herself when she hugged them “God I love my family!”. Personally, I am quite sorry we did not see more of Ashley’s mother and brother in particular, mostly because of the CC drama. Usually we would have had more time to see JP interact with the others.
Good eyes, and good head! One of the best moments of the ‘meet the family’ part of the episode is actually a deleted scene where JP declares his love for Ashley to Mike and Elliott, and gets both advice and blessing. Sadly, it seems the video is not available any more!
So, let’s take a look at the bits with the family we did see in the actual broadcast:
Thank God she got to take them off!
Now, we do need to touch on Christie’s reaction to meeting JP, and her absolute opinion of him at the time. I must admit, I am a bit like JP: I understand she was protective, but I still don’t get it 🙂 However, I think I see the reasons why: she was expecting Ashley to end up with someone as bubbly and excited as herself, instead of realizing that JP, with his quieter way, balanced her out perfectly. In my mind, her relative calmness with JP compared to the excitement of Ben or even Brad, comes from the sense of serenity and security she feels with JP. Me and my hubby are living proof that complementing each other is much better in the long run than being similar. I think Ashley was right to think that CC would prefer Ben because they were so similar.
But that is just my interpretation I guess. I think she didn’t feel she had to overact her happiness, but just be. With Ben the next day, I often felt that she was really trying hard to look a lot bubblier, mostly because of the feedback from CC the previous day. Again, just my interpretation…
I remember the very first time I watched this whole scene between Ashley, Christie and their mum, I was screaming at the TV so loud “LISTEN TO YOUR MUM!!!” 😉
Again, I think, as Ash explained, that CC missed the fact that Ashley was not SUBDUED but SERENE. Love will do that to you!
And then, in her turmoil, Ashley was unable to totally and unconditionally defend their relationship. Especially after he had unequivocally and without hesitation announced his love for her to her whole family. He seemed very hurt by it after she left him on the beach.
Of course, a lot of time is then spent talking about what happened when JP met the rest of Ashley’s family.
To be honest, I agreed with Ashley at the time that the age difference and complementarity (again, not a word) question raised by CC were a good opportunity to make sure that they were on the same page and look at the relationship from a more objective point of view. And it gave us some amazing gems… “When it comes to you, I’m flexible on EVERYTHING” or “I want US to start a new life together.”
The next part of the show has now become one of the most loved by “JordAsh” fans… that evening looked so gorgeous. Again, as in the Overnights’ episode, I found that either the relationship or the editing was a lot more subtle and oriented towards the emotional than the physical when compared to Ben’s (remember that making out on the bed?). Instead, we had hands touching and caressing, thoughtful looks and tender kisses… “I want her – Forever”.
But then again, I am soooo not objective!
“My dearest Ashley: This is the first chapter to the greatest love story ever told. The past few months have been the happiest of my life and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Meeting you has changed my life forever and falling in love with you is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. When we look back years from now, still happy and very much in love, we’ll always remember this time in our lives where ‘Ashley & JP’ first began. I love you, baby, with all my heart and I can’t wait for the next chapter. Love always, J.”
And FINALLY, we are at the end point, the Final Rose.
I adore Ben, and cannot wait to see him back on our screens. But not for our Ashley! So, as often in these recaps, I will skip over him and focus on #TeamCupcake!
Before I go all romantic, and assuming 99% of the people reading this are indeed Female, I will indulge in some eye candy (Sorry Ash, but you get him for the rest of your life, we get him on a few screen grabs!)
We get to the moment of the ring choice – I have read quite a few people saying that Ben’s choice was better than JP’s.
There was something I spotted when I first saw the finale, which I confirmed while working on this post. The planes used by JP and Ben were different. Therefore , once we saw who went into which, it was obvious from the moment Ashley’s voice-over started talking about saying good-bye and we saw the plane arrive, that Ben was going to get a No. At the time I got annoyed as it ruined about 3 minutes + ads of suspense *grin* (except I was pretty sure of the result anyway!) but I can be a bit of a freak when it comes to bad editing, and it annoyed me.
And then we hear Ashley’s voice: “..putting an end to a relationship that at one point I thought could be everlasting…” as this plane appears:
Nice and blank… Ben’s.
BTW, I will not point them out below, but if you look at the whole proposal/final rose scenes, the editing is awful… he has the rose on before she gives it, and when she says ‘I love you Baby’ after we see her give the Rose to JP, no rose on his lapel…
I have to give props to ABC for the romantic build-up, as we see the lovebirds waiting to be reunited and looking slightly stressed and impatient:
But the big moment is finally there… almost 1500 words already in this post, and probably as many pics, so I will let the images do the talking (mostly).
In hindsight, knowing that Ashley had already told JP she was in love with him, I am a little annoyed at the whole “still afraid” bit. JP has admitted since that he was pretty sure she would pick him and she was certain he would propose.
BUT, I know how the show works, and it was all done for effect.
It’s funny, I was thinking at one point “this is so amazing, I wish my proposal was like that”… and then I realize the setting is less important than the feelings. In actual facts, my now husband of 9 years proposed to me one Sunday morning, in the tiny kitchen of our 1 bed-flat, wearing just shorts, while I was in an old T-shirt, buttering toasts… Still had the knife in my hand, so he must have felt confident 🙂 I only wish JP and Ashley are as happy and together in 9 years as I am with Mark.
Interruption over, sorry!
The “afters” are the best bit, but I want to keep them and put them all together in my next post on the ATFR, which I hope to get done this week-end! In the meantime, thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed!
